Draft Local Planning Policy No. 13 - Tree Retention and Provision (Closed)

Council at their 25 June 2024 Ordinary Council Meeting (2024 Council Meetings » Town of Bassendean) resolved to support a draft amended Local Planning No. 13 – Tree Retention and Provision for the purposes of advertising.

The draft amended Policy seeks to introduce statutory controls to restrict removal of trees and tree damaging activities on private property in some circumstances. Removal of mature trees from private property as part of development, or where no development is occurring at all, is resulting in a loss of tree canopy across and impacting the benefits tree canopy has on:

  • Mitigating the urban heat island effect;
  • Mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change;
  • Enhancing and supporting biodiversity; and
  • Maintaining the Town’s leafy green character.

Through establishing statutory controls to restrict the removal of trees on private property, the Town seeks to ensure opportunities to retain mature trees are given adequate consideration when determining development proposals involving removal of trees.

In support of the advertising the Town has prepared a Frequently Asked Questions Document (available here: LPP-13-FAQ-Document.pdf) which will hopefully answer any questions you may have about the draft policy. If you have any other questions, please contact the Town's Planning Services on 9377 8000 or via [email protected].

Submissions should be made in writing to the Chief Executive Officer, via email [email protected] or via post PO Box 87, Bassendean WA 6934. The advertising period closes 5:00pm Friday 30 August 2024.
